ADVISE, ADVISE ON (ABOUT), OF, WITHAdvise в значении 'советовать' может употребляться с двумя прямыми дополнениями или с прямым и предложным дополнением (с предлогами on или about): to advise a patient a change of air, to advise a friend on (about) a new hat. Ср. русск. посоветовать кому-л. что-л. и дать кому-л. совет по поводу (в отношении) чего-л. Advise в значении 'извещать кого-л. о чем-л.' (в деловой переписке) употребляется с прямым и предложным дополнением (с предлогом of): to advise the parents of their son's success. Advise может также означать 'советоваться'; в этом случае употребляются два дополнения – одно с предлогом with, другое с предлогом on (или about): to advise with friends on (about) a certain affair. •• Не следует забывать о таком значении слова advise, как извещать, сообщать, ставить в известность. В изданной журналом «Ридерз дайджест» книге Success with Words указывается, что это значение слова advise характерно для бизнеса и политики, я бы добавил – и для официально-бюрократического словоупотребления. Пример из этой книги: President Carter advised his Cabinet that he expected to resolve the remaining disarmament differences personally with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.
•• Теперь об известной рекомендации не употреблять слово advice (в значении совет) во множественном числе и даже в единственном числе говорить piece of advice. Первое верно, второе всегда казалось мне странным. Действительно, предлагаемый вариант звучит довольно старомодно. В единственном числе надо говорить advice (пусть это существительное в английском языке, в отличие от русского, неисчисляемое). Во множественном советы – recommendations, suggestions и опять-таки advice.
